ECNC, UNEP, the Province of Limburg (B) and the Municipality of Oisterwijk (NL) are pleased to invite you to the first conference of the European Learning Network for Regions and Biodiversity: ‘Greening European Regions – Biodiversity as a boost for local and regional economy’. The conference will take place at the Tiliander theatre, Spoorlaan 82, Oisterwijk, the Netherlands on Wednesday 12 December 2012 from 09:00 to 17:30.

The central theme of the conference is the role of regions and municipalities in greening the economy, with emphasis on the value of biodiversity and ecosystem services. A particular focus is on the following cross-cutting themes:
• Green infrastructure and nature restoration
• Green economy – rebuilding natural capital
• Green partnerships – communication and training

The conference will discuss practical ways to contribute to the implementation of the following international policy agendas:
• The EU’s Biodiversity Strategy 2020, and its 15% restoration target and no net loss target
• The Plan of Action on Sub-national Governments, Cities, and other Local Authorities for Biodiversity adopted by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) Parties
It is a unique occasion for people working in the field of biodiversity at local and regional level to exchange experience and expertise on how to green local and regional economies while mobilizing the potentials of biodiversity and ecosystem services. There will be ample opportunities for networking as well, in particular with a view to forging new partnerships for the development of joint project proposals and exchange initiatives.

The conference will be opened and hosted by the Mayor of Oisterwijk, Mr Hans Janssen.
The Head of Biodiversity, DG Environment of the European Commission, Mr François Wakenhut, will address the conference, and the keynote speech will be delivered by the Vice President of Natuurpunt, Goldman Prize Winner and Ashoka Fellow, Mr Ignace Schops.
The conference’s closing speech will be given by the Queen’s Commissioner of the Province of Noord-Brabant and President of the Dutch Delegation in the Committee of the Regions, Prof. Dr Wim van de Donk.

During three parallel workshops the contributions of biodiversity to green economy, infrastructure and partnerships will be discussed. The results of the workshop will be debated by a panel including representatives of the Committee of the Regions, the Environmental Conference of the Regions of Europe and the Network of Associations of Local Authorities of Southeast Europe.

The conference’s closing speech will be given by the Queen’s Commissioner of the Province of Noord-Brabant and President of the Dutch Delegation in the Committee of the Regions, Prof. Dr Wim van de Donk.
