Conference „Constructive Unilateralism: Invigorating Two-State-Dynamics in the Middle East Peace Process”, organised by the Hans Seidel Foundation and the Centre for European Studies

Location: Brussels

19th February 2013, 18h00 – 21h00
Venue: Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the EU, Rue Wiertz 77, 1000 Brussels

The absence of bilateral negotiations along with accelerated settlement building activities beyond the Israeli pre-1967 border is hindering progress in the Middle East Peace Process. Moreover, due to the shift of political attention towards Syria, Egypt, and Iran, the agenda of the European and international community currently dispenses with widespread attention towards the Middle East Peace Process. By contrast, some influential stakeholders in Israeli politics and civil society increasingly fear an irreversible strengthening of a one-state-reality, which would ultimately lead to an Israeli annexation of parts of the West Bank and the establishment of restrictive policies vis-à-vis the Palestinian population.

The concept of constructive unilateralism, which facilitates the withdrawal of Israeli settlements in the West Bank, proposes interim steps to reinvigorate two-state-dynamics with out-of-the-box thinking. In the absence of progress at the negotiation table, constructive unilateralism might be one of the few confidence building measures in a situation, which only allows for gradualism and interim solutions.

The present conference allows representatives of the think tank Blue White Future to present their concept and to enter into a discussion with EU representatives on the role of the international community for the peace process.
