The aim of the conference is to spread and consolidate the image of the Carpathian Region, the second most important European mountainous region, at the European Union level. The Carpathian Region requires the EU engagement, the EU commitment and immediate cover by the European form of cooperation aimed at strengthening territorial cooperation, economic growth and sustainable development of the whole region. Deepening of regional relationships, strengthening and promotion of the cooperation at the local and regional level will also be the subject of the conference.

The Carpathians represent an important part of Europe’s regional heritage with social, cultural and natural resources including at the same time the poorest and most neglected regions of the EU with almost 20 million inhabitants. It is a coherent space and requires specific EU attention as well as coordinated support under the framework of European policy. With its specificity, Carpathian region is one of the two most important European mountainous regions. Moreover, after the last enlargement Carpathian Region has become the eastern border of the EU what particularly increased its importance for stability of the whole European Union. The Carpathians' mountain problems are not covered by any multilateral form of cooperation on the central-eastern flank of the European Union, staying thereby in the shadow of interest of the Union. The Carpathian Region meets all criteria of the macro-regional strategies as defined by the European Commission.
The invited guests include ministers of regional development from the seven Carpathian Convention countries (Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovak Republic, Ukraine) as well as Austria, representatives of the Carpathian regions, experts from the European Commission, ambassadors and members of the National Parliaments and the European Parliament.

The conference will take place on Tuesday, 3rd December 2013, between 10:00 and 13:00 in room ASP 5E2 in the European Parliament in Brussels.
