In the frame of ongoing debates on the future Cohesion Policy, this workshop intents to exchange on future orientations and propositions for the Carpathian area. It is organised by UNEP Vienna – Interim Secretariat of the Carpathian Convention (UNEP Vienna – ISCC) and European Academy of Bolzano (EURAC Research) with the support of AEBR (Association of European Border Regions) and AEM (European Association of Elected Representatives from Mountain Regions)

During the Workshop the discussion paper on the development of a macroregional strategy for the Carpathian area will be presented by UNEP Vienna – ISCC and representatives of the European Union (EU), the national experts of the Carpathian Countries and the Carpathian regions, and other relevant organisations will be invited to discuss the document.

The discussion paper has been drafted by UNEP Vienna – ISCC together with the EURAC expert team in Vienna and AEM. It includes key recommendations aimed at promoting a more integrated development of the Carpathians through a better coordination of the activities developed by the main actors involved in the region. It furthermore encourages the establishment of new initiatives and cooperation instruments, such as an European Territorial Cooperation Programme for the Carpathian Area (Carpathian Space Programme).

On the basis of the outcomes of the Workshop, UNEP Vienna – ISCC will elaborate final recommendations that will be submitted for their adoption to the Third Conference of the Parties of the Carpathian Convention (COP 3), that will take place in May 2011 in Bratislava. These recommendations should become the basis for the advancement of a macroregional strategy for the Carpathians by the EU, that should ideally follow the model of the strategies for the Baltic Sea and for the Danube Region.

A second workshop gathering other relevant stakeholders will be organised after the COP3 in order to move forward the process towards a macroregional strategy for the Carpathian Area.

The participation in the Workshop is upon invitation only.
