Meeting with the new Director General of the DG Regio:

Only two days after taking over the position as new Director General for regional policy, Walter Deffaa confirmed a request for a meeting with the AEBR. The one-hour meeting, in which the Secretary General Martín Guillermo Ramírez and the Chairman of the Advisory Committee, Jens Gabbe, took part, was already on 19 March 2012 in Brussels.

Walter Deffaa knows the AEBR already since 1988 from its work in the cabinets of the Commissioners A. Pfeiffer, Peter Schmidhuber and Monika Wulf-Mathies. Therefore, an intensive exchange of thoughts and ideas about the future cohesion policy, particularly with regard to cross-border cooperation, took place. The focus was on issues of an even better decentralisation of INTERREG A programmes and improved cross-border quality (possible, if the respective provisions of the new regulations are adopted as provided in the draft) as well as on the absolutely essential simplifications in management and controlling. Walter Deffaa, who was Director General for Taxation and Customs Union in the EU-Commission before, made clear that he is going to pay his full attention to these themes and asked the AEBR to continue to submit recommendations and statements and directly to him and the DG Regio.

At the end of the meeting the AEBR handed over a book about the history of cross-border cooperation and invited the new Director General to the AEBR Seminar on 20 April 2012 in Brussels, where more than 100 representatives of the European border areas are expected to report about current experiences with EU-programmes.
