AEBR Task Force 'Cross-Border Culture' has started preparations for the next meeting in spring 2013 - You are invited to contribute your ideas and proposals!:

The participants of the workshop Cultural practice in the context of the meeting of the AEBR last November in Berlin emphasized the need to develop and install a cultural practice around the theme of cultural diversity.

According to the participants, the European border regions could serve as test zones for such a cultural practice in the coming years. Developing cultural "welding points" throughout Europe, a chain of cultural welds formed by European Border Regions was formulated as a dream.

You have received a summary of the November meeting as well as the jointly developed recommendations, which were presented to the general meeting of the AEBR the day after the workshop (Conclusions ENGLISH, FRENCH, GERMANPresentation). 

Now, we try to realize the ambition to organize a next practical workshop in spring 2013 (most probably in April, but March and May are also in discussion). The bureau MCHvE 2018 (Maastricht Kandidaat Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa 2018) is willing to take over the substantive and practical preparation of the workshop.

The AEBR will assist in the preparation of this and upcoming workshops and will try to find funding for travel and accommodation costs. In case of concrete projects, the AEBR will facilitate the search for partners across Europe and can support future applications for EU funding. Furthermore, AEBR will also help to lobby at European level for these and similar initiatives to make the cultural exchange a central item on the European agenda.

We would like to ask you to reflect on the content of this practical cultural research.

  • The work of Peter Brook

The actor moves a bamboo stick filled with rice grains, back and forth. We see a paper ship that increasingly fierce begins to vibrate. We can’t see the water of the sea nor the waves but we imagine this sea. We, that’s the audience looking at the presentation “The Storm” of Shakespeare. The storm is illustrated by the rice grains. It is a storm with hurricane force that throws the ship, the crew and all on land. That’s how I (Guido Wevers) remember the opening of Peter Brooks version of Shakespeare's The Storm, now many years after the representation in the Paris Theatre Bouffe du Nord. Brook staged this storm with a cast of actors coming from many countries and continents. His performance was "also" a form of research. How can the characters of the actors, each from a different cultural background, how can these different signs, be exploited? What do they teach us? How do they force us in the theatre to have a new look at the world around us?
For me, the work of Peter Brook's theatre Bouffe du Nord in Paris has always been an example of developing a cultural practice of which the diversity of cultures is the subject.

  • Sonderborg

The echoes of past wars hang at a spot near the mill, just outside Sonderborg. No matter which story you tell there, no matter what event you perform there, those echoes will always resound. Speaking is a lady from Sonderborg participating in the workshop Cultural Practice in European Border Regions. Cultural practice in European Border Regions. The starting point for the development of a cultural practice occurs almost automatically.

  • Lost in Translation

They were madly in love, the Flemish writer and the beautiful Pakistani. But finally he could not stand the simplistic English they talked with each other. He could not stand the superficial conversations they had. He got annoyed about the simple phrases they used in that odd English. She was surprised about his twists. Being in love was apparently not enough for having a relationship. This subject is the starting point for a theatre in the Euregio Meuse-Rhine. Amateurs and professionals work together in the field of theatre, film, music, poetry et cetera.

How could a cultural practice look like?

Our question: Can you give – from your own experience - examples of cultural practices around cultural diversity?
