Brussels, 20 May 2014: Meeting of AEBR Representatives with Director General Walter Deffaa :

On 20 May 2014, AEBR Secretary General Martín Guillermo Ramírez and Jens Gabbe, Chair of the AEBR Advisory Committee, met Walter Deffaa , Director General for Regional and Urban Policy to discuss the new EU regulations, in particular those on territorial cooperation and EGTC.

In this context, territorial effects of the Europe 2020 strategy as well as the question of what kind of contribution could be rendered by cross-border cooperation were addressed. The need to maintain support for small-scale projects was also discussed.

With regard to the expected approval of programmes, AEBR presented some proposals and recommendations to ensure the necessary involvement of the regional/local level in the management as well as joint financing of projects by means of a joint bank account.

Director General Deffaa stressed the need to improve the development of indicators (also cross-border indicators) in future so that results and impact of EU cohesion and regional policy could be measured.

Another point which was discussed vividly was how still existing qualitative differences in the cross-border co-operation could be resolved step by step. The AEBR representatives handed over to Director General Deffaa the recently elaborated document "Strengthening CBC - How to handle successful CBC”. The working method described therein enabled the association to successfully achieve support for border regions. Director General Deffaa found these proposals very interesting and agreed to deepen this discussion with AEBR and to go on exchanging views on EU territorial policy.
