29 June 2016, Brussels: Conference “Simplifying ESI Funds to Increase Efficiency of Infrastructure Projects”:


The Association of European Border Regions was invited to the conference “Simplifying ESI Funds to Increase Efficiency of Infrastructure Projects”, which took place on 29 June 2016 in Brussels. Mr. César Morcillo,  Director of the Office of Extremadura in Brussels and coordinator of the AEBR Antenna in Brussels, represented the AEBR in this conference.

After the opening speech of the EC Vice-President for Euro and Social Dialogue Valdis Dombrovskis, the EIB Vice President Laszlo Baranyay stressed the potential of financial instruments and their complementarities with the European Structural and Investment Funds.

The Chair of the EP BUDG Committee Jean Arthuis focused on the ways of achieving effectiveness and efficiency of a performance and results-oriented EU budget. The ALDE MEPs Ivan Jakovčić, ALDE Coordinator of the Committee on Regional Development and Enrique Calvet ChambonMember of the EP EMPL Committee, pointed out the importance of increasing the efficiency of EU financing to stimulate further investment. 

Furthermore, measures to simplify access to EU funds for beneficiaries were pointed out, and examples of best practices in implementation of infrastructure projects were presented.

Mrs Mihaylova, Chair of the REGI Committee (European Parliament) closed the meeting by informing that the ALDE Group in the EP will elaborate a position paper on simplification with the conclusions of this conference, also taking into account the findings of the previous ones.
