Joensuu calling 28/07/2016 - Join the campaing and spread the message:

The Regional Council of North Karelia would like to share with you information of a spontaneous European-wide campaign for cities, towns and municipalities, which has been launched by a Finnish city Joensuu on Thursday 07/07/2016.

Joensuu is calling upon all European cities, towns and municipalities to raise the European flag on Thursday 28/07/2016 above every town hall in some way and then share a picture on city web pages and in social media. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Finland and the Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities and are supporting the campaign.

Joensuu believes that an indie-like campaign, joining together at citizen’s level, is needed right now in Europe. They also state that whilst the Europe we live in is far from perfect, it is the least imperfect of all the alternatives. The campaign is not about the EU as an institution – it is about being European and also about the need for better local leadership. Europe is not defined geographically in any way. European flag is the flag of European Council with 47 member states.

Joining up is simple and easy: short city information should be provided at, and then the European Flag should presented at the town hall in whatever way the cities feel - Thursday 28/07/2016. Participants are invited to share a picture of the event on their web pages and in social media by using hashtag #WeAreEurope. The campaign web pages will also show a map, where the cities who have joined in are shown. Cities may also leave a short greeting there. Attached you will find further information – and in web.

We wish that your town can also join the campaign and spread the message!

With best wishes and regards,

Risto Poutiainen
