In Memoriam: Paweł Adamowicz (1965-2019), Mayor of Gdansk:

Paweł Bogan Adamowicz, Mayor of Gdańsk (Poland) since 1998, passed away on 14 January 2019 after a brutal attack the previous day during a live charity event in his home town.

This Polish politician and lawyer served as Mayor of the city of Gdańsk for more than twenty years and was long standing member of the European Committee of the Regions since 2011.

As Karl-Heinz Lambertz, President of the Committee of the Regions reminded after the news of his death, “his re-election six times over this period is a testament that he was truly a Mayor of the people for the people. He was deeply appreciated for his work creating the city of Gdańsk into an open, dynamic and vibrant city strongly rooted in the European Union. He was always approachable and willing to listen to the citizens of his beloved city Gdańsk, as he used to call it. (…) Today, we have lost a man that represented the European spirit. Paweł was a true humanitarian, a fighter for human rights and protector of democracy. Today, we lost a man who represents the founding values of European peace, freedom, solidarity and democracy. A friend, who will never be forgotten.”
