Marrakesh, 15 November 2016: Meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM) :

AEBR Secretary General Martín Guillermo Ramírez was invited to speak on the occasion of the meeting of the Euro-Mediterranean Regional and Local Assembly (ARLEM), which was held in Marrakesh on 15 November 2016. His intervention focused on “CBC in the Mediterranean Region“.

The President of Sardinia (IT), Mr. Francesco Pigliaru presented the CoR document "CBC in the Mediterranean" in a crucial moment for the relationship between shores, with waves of migrants and refugees, plus several environmental challenges. Local and regional authorities play a very important role fo the sustainable development of the surrounding territories of the Mare Nostrum. The AEBR showed its support to this document and highlighted some aspects of particular relevance for the AEBR. A brief overview of CBC in Europe and the inspiration for other continents was followed by some arguments for integration, trust building and development; the CB added value for local and national processes; and the need to have adminsitrative, legal and financial instruments to consolidate territorial cooperation. CB territories are integration laboratories where obstacles can be identified, solutions proposed, etc. From CB initiatives or structures can emerge solid and efficient collaborations in many fields: public services, economic development, transport infrastructure, communications, energy, etc. And all of this with a sustainable perspective under the framework of the COP 22.
