The Association of European Border Regions (AEBR) has jointly organized with the City Council of Rubí (Spain) the workshop “Local and Regional Climate Action” within the framework of the 18th European Week of Regions and Cities. Due to current security and health recommendations, it took place online.
The session was presented by the international artist and activist Ruslana, who gave a closer approach to citizens, especially the youngest ones. Likewise, it was moderated by the General Secretary of AEBR, Martín Guillermo Ramírez.
The panel allowed the exchange of the experiences from different European cities and regions in the field of fighting climate change through the presentation of the experiences of Rubí (Spain), Köln (Germany), Odessa Region (Ukraine) and Lappeenranta (Finland).
The Mayor of Rubí, Ana María Martínez, explained the Rubí Brilla project, a strategic vision of energy that covers all areas – industry, commerce, families and administration – and which can be developed without the need for large investments.
After the Mayor’s intervention, Jens Conrad, Head of alternative transport and Director of Köln’s zero-emissions project, presented the work carried out in this municipality to implement hydrogen fuel cell buses in the public transport fleet. Then, Markku Mäki-Hokkonen, Development Manager of Lappeenranta (Finland), explained the determined commitment of this industrial city to become a green municipality. Finally, Yuriy Dimchoglo, Vice President of the Odessa Regional Council, spoke about promoting wind and solar energy in this area of Ukraine.
The session was closed by the intervention of a volunteer from the Interreg Volunteer Youth initiative, who asked some questions to the speakers from the youth’s point of view.
