Vaccines in the Ecuador-Peru Border Area

23 September 2021

On 17 of September, the Government of Ecuador delivered to Peru 336,000 units of the Astrazeneca COVID-19 vaccine. These shots will allow for the vaccination of 168,000 people in the Ecuador-Peru border area.

This donation happened in the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding in Matters of Healthcare, signed by both countries in 2019 and in virtue of which both countries commit to mutual assistance in such matters. This Memorandum is regarded as an example of humanitarian cross-border cooperation, made possible through continued dialogue and effective coordination between authorities in both countries. It has allowed for the adoption of common adequate measures to counter the COVID-19 emergency in the border area and to safeguard the health of both countries’ populations.

These objectives are shared by the Binational Plan for the Development of the Ecuador-Peru Border Region, created by the signature of the 1998 Brasília Peace Agreements, whose two national chapters have developed several activities in favour of the health of the population of the border area, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Binational Plan extends its vows for the continuity of the present efforts being carried out in both countries in the context of the pandemic towards the maintenance of health of the population, particularly that of the border region, in the hope that this will allow for the normalisation of social and economic life in the near future.

AEBR is collaborating with the Binational Plan promoting the exchange of information and best practices on cross-border cooperation between Europe and the Ecuador-Peru border area.
