The AEBR b-solutions team and European Commission DG REGIO Border Focal Point joined colleagues in Valga-Valka on 14 March 2024 for a workshop on cross-border access to health services at Valga Hospital.
The workshop was opened by Gita Avote, Chairwoman of Valka Municipality Council (hosting), and moderated by AEBR b-solutions Expert Caitriona Mullan. Participants from Valka Municipality (Latvia) and the Municipality of Valga (Estonia), health service leaders and clinicians from Latvia and Estonia, and the Latvian and Estonian EU National Contact Points for the Directive on Cross-Border Healthcare and Patients’ Rights attended.
Expert evidence on the feasibility and population need for the expansion of cross-border patient access was presented by Daiga Behmane and Alina Dūdele of Riga’s Stradine University.
The workshop, which included speaker contributions from AEBR Secretary General Martin Guillermo and DG REGIO Border Focal Point Coordinator Ricardo Ferreira, focused firstly on the elaboration of the details of a proposed expanded agreement between Latvia and Estonia for cross-border patient services at Valga Hospital (EE), based on the good practice model established as a result of a b-solutions case study. It also discussed additionally on further opportunities for deepening cross-border collaboration for more resilient health ecosystems and population health.
Special thanks to Deputy Vilmar Vesingi, Toms Simtins, and Zane Simane of Valka Municipality for leading and coordinating the event and for such a warm welcome for our team.
